Ten on the Tenth: Things To Do In Las Vegas

If you came here looking for recommendations based on personal experience - my apologies!
You see I haven't actually been to Las Vegas - YET!
I'm about to go and have been reading my guide books and planning with my friends how we can fill our 7 nights (and 6 days) there.  So here are 10 things I am planning to see and do in Vegas:

First and foremost there is Michael's!
Yes, the hobby store was actually the reason given for flying 5000 miles around the world when we first started talking about the trip - 4 scrapbookers in search of a 40% off coupon!  I think it might have been cheaper to pay full price and delivery charges from 2Peas, but possibly not as much fun.

Secondly there will be the illuminations; I'm currently struggling to imagine daylight in Las Vegas - most of the TV and film images that I recall are of  the strip at night!  I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the Bellagio Fountains.

Thirdly there will be a trip to see Cirque du Soleil - my third show, having already hugely enjoyed Alegría in Antwerp (1998) and Quidam in Manchester (2001) ... I am really looking forward to watching Mystère at the Treasure Island Hotel.

Then there is the hotel we'll be staying in - New York New York - the one with the built in roller coaster!

In fact no.s 5, 6, 7 and 8 are also hotels - I can't wait to see the Luxor, Paris, Venetian and Caesar's Palace - around the world in 3 miles?!

I'm also going to look out for a Dairy Queen as I want to try a Choco-Cherry Love Blizzard as recommended by Susanne!

And finally, even though I don't really gamble at home (the only time I bet on a horse in the Grand National it was cancelled) I will be chancing the odd $10 here and there - but as I don't know how to play poker, blackjack or craps, and slot machines are a mystery to me, I'm not sure where I'll be losing my money!

Have you got any tips or recommendations (or warnings) about Vegas for me?  Do please share before going off to Shimelle's place for more Tens on the Tenth.

Sounds like you have a fun trip planned. It's been almost 20 years since I've been to Las Vegas and I'm sure it's changed quite a bit. We walked in on the filming of The Casino movie, which was interesting. Hope you have a great trip!!

You can do a wonderful helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon and have a champagne brunch once you are there. Our English relatives booked this and said it was fabulous. You can get it for half off once you are in Vegas!

I love to go scrapbook shopping. My fave store is towards the airport...I will look it up for you but It is around Pecos or Russell. There is a Michaels fairly close by ss well. I take the bus it hubby is at a conference etc but we have driven there as well.

We both like to go to the outlets and hubby almost buys Dockers pants for work and gets them for about half of the Canadian price.

Red Rock Canyon as sunset is phenoninal...the sun hits the miuntains about an hour or and hour and a half before sunset so go early enough to accomodate. There are wild burros on the way out there...if you stop they will pproach your car! At sunset, the sunlight hits the rock walls of the
canyon and the rocks light up so unbelievably.

I will try to think of more but am tired as just got home from a few days away.

Hi there...Scrappymo! again...The scrapbook store I was thinking of is Scrappin Time...it is the largest store in Vegas...located at 5915 S Eastern near the Walmart. You can get to it by bus.
If the bus hasn't changed its route since I was there last (couple of years) You will be heading down the strip towards the airport. The bus will turn left onto E Russell and you get off at S Eastern corner and you walk a very short distance to the store.
The concierge at the hotel drew me a map and got me the bus route and bus numbers. When my husband got through his conference we went back in the rental car...it was super easy to get to.
There is another store down Sahara...I think it is called Kandyland or something similar.

Another thing we like to do is a show every night. We would pay full price for the great shows but on other nights walk down to beside the coke bottle and get the half price tickets for whatever caught our fancy.

So jealous - you will have a whale of a time - looking forward to seeing all the photos you take and the pages you create. Never been but my Mum and my cousins did the Grand Canyon by helicopter and it was unmissable so give that a shot :0)

I have to confess to being the only person I know who didn't enjoy Vegas! I did though enjoy looking through the hotels..the Venetian and Ceasar's Palace were my faves...and the reasons for not enjoying my visit could very well turn up in a Storytelling Sunday!

Well a BIG smile came across my face when I saw your 10, only today hubby Sid he thought it would be fun to take a long weekend in Vegas, so I'll be checking back to see how you get on. All this came about as there was an article of things to do in Vegas in the paper today, so here is what they suggest;
Take in a show
Dine at one of the top restaurants
Visit the Graceland wedding chapel - home of the original Elvis themed wedding.
Take a gondola ride
Visit death valley
Visit the Fremont Street experience
Enjoy amazing views & food from the 56th floor at Alize
See the Bellagio Fountain
Top up your tan at the man made beach at the Mandalay Hotel
And lastly see Fine art at the Bellagio Gallery. Personally, I think theyve made a huge mistake missing ou Micheals from the list lol. Have fun

I have no idea what would be best to do, but luckily others, I see, have! Hope you have a wonderful time. Clearly, you'd need to take only minimal clothing with you so you have room for all that s scrapbooking stuff!

I'd want to go to the petrified forest and grand canyon, wandering down the strip might be fun and I've actually got family out there somewhere.

Enjoy the shopping, something about getting to see everything is such a thrill for those of us who shop on line so much!

Have a wonderful time! When walking down the strip don't make eye contact with all the men slapping stacks of paper across their palms. They are handing out ads for strip clubs. I was with dh and ours sons who were maybe 11 and 15 at the time and they still were all around us. Dress to the nines, put on makeup and heels and go to one of the big name restaurants. With 7 days I really would do the trip over to Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.. Take sunscreen!

You do realise you'll have to do this again when you come back!!
DD and SIL went to Vegas for their honeymoon and Julie Tucker Wolek went there for her her anniversary - I'm sure she did a post or two (you can get to her blog via a link in my side bar).
I only know it from watching CSI
Have a great time

I LOVE Vegas!! I have been several times and each time I love it even more! You can see lots of great shows - you don't necessarily have to pay for the big ones as there are many good shows that cost less. Also, you really need to take good walking shoes - the strip is deceiving, you will think "oh the Wynn is just another block or so" but really it's probably more like 7 blocks away!! Take lots of photos :) Oh and try to go to the Grand Canyon - it is beautiful!
